Student Planner Timeline

10th Grade/Sophomore Year

  • Talk to your high school counselor about the following:

    • High school curriculum needed to satisfy the requirements of the colleges you are interested in attending.

    • AP and other honors-level courses available at your school. How do you enroll in them if you are eligible for the courses?

  • Update your High School Planner with courses taken, tests taken, extracurricular activities, etc.

  • Continue extracurricular activities, as admissions officers look at students' extracurricular activities when considering them for admission.

  • Continue participation in academic enrichment programs, summer workshops, and camps with specialty focuses such as music, arts, science, etc.

  • Discuss admissions tests with your high school counselor. The tests that are most appropriate for you depend on your career goals. Don't spend time preparing for tests you do not need to take!

  • Ask your counselor about taking the ACT PLAN test in the fall, normally in October or November. This is a valuable test to help you prepare for the ACT which you can take during the spring of your junior year.

  • Take the PSAT in October. In addition to helping you prepare for the SAT, it is valuable practice for taking the PSAT again in your junior year when your scores will count for the National Merit Scholarship Program. You will receive your PSAT results in December. Review your scores with your counselor to determine your strengths and weaknesses. Use your results to help guide you in preparing for the SAT.

  • Start preparing for the ACT and SAT. Use the tutorials available in GAcollege411's Test Prep to help increase your scores. If you have not already done so, develop a study plan to help you reach your target scores.

  • Register for the SAT Subject Tests for the applicable classes that you will be completing this year. Talk to your high school counselor to decide which subject tests would be appropriate for you to take.

  • Continue family financial planning for college. Readjust your goals as needed to work toward academic, athletic, and other scholarships.
