Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship

Merit-based Scholarship
Purpose
The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship encourages students to perform well academically in high school and rewards students that perform exceptionally well.
The scholarship rewards these students by giving them scholarship money for college.
Eligibility
To be eligible for an award, students must:
- Show excellent academic achievement in high school;
- Be a legal resident of Georgia;
- Be an eligible U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen, according to definitions in the regulations;
- Turn in all application materials and documentation no later than February 1;
- Graduate from a public or private high school or receive the GED during the same year that the application is submitted; and
- Be accepted or have applied at an eligible college as a full-time student.
Value
About 200 awards are made each year to high school graduates.
The amount of the award is generally $1,500 a year.
The scholarship can be renewed for up to three more years of college as long as the student is still eligible.
Application Procedure
- Students should apply during the year right before they plan to graduate from high school.
- Students can get applications from the high school counselor's office starting in December.
- The high school must nominate the students.
- All applications should be completed and turned in to the Georgia Department of Education (GDOE) by February 1.
- Students that are selected as Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholars will receive a letter usually by July. The letter will come from GDOE.
- Students that are awarded and that will attend college in Georgia should complete the online application using GSFAPPS
.
- Students that are awarded and that will attend college out-of-state should complete the paper application.
Once completed, take the application to the financial aid office at the school you are attending so that it can be certified. Then, return the application to GSFC.
A paper application for 2011-2012 will be posted if funding becomes available for the program.
Other Information
Money for this scholarship comes from the federal government.
So, students can apply if they are attending an in-state or out-of-state college.
