Northeast Georgia Health Systems Nurse Program

This program has been suspended for the 2010-2011 academic year and is no longer available.

The Northeast Georgia Health System Service Cancelable Loan program is jointly offered by the Georgia Student Finance Commission, the Northeast Georgia Health System, Inc., North Georgia College and State University, Brenau University, Piedmont College, and the Augusta Campus of the Medical College of Georgia.

Value


Students who enroll in the program are eligible for service repayable loans ranging from a minimum of $200 per academic year to a maximum of $2,500 for freshman, $3,500 for sophomores, $4,000 for juniors, and $4,500 for seniors. The Georgia Student Finance Authority (GSFA) determines the exact loan amount that each student is eligible to receive.

Eligibility Requirements


You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA ) and have the results sent to the college you plan to attend. The college will then determine your eligibility for financial aid including this loan program. You should check with the financial aid office to make sure you do not need to do any other paperwork.

If you are, the recommendation and loan amount are included in your financial aid award package. Other eligibility criteria is as follows:

  • Be a United States citizen, United State national, or eligible non-citizen;
  • Be a legal resident of Georgia as defined by GSFA;
  • Be accepted for admission or enrolled as at least a half-time student in a GSFA-approved postsecondary educational institution;
  • Be accepted for admission or enrolled in good academic standing as determined by the school and maintain at least a C average, except where otherwise specified;
  • Not owe a refund on any Federal Pell grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), or Student Incentive Grant (SIG);
  • Not be in default on any federal education loan; and
  • Have complete core curriculum and be accepted for admission in an approved critical field of study.

Service Commitment


Students who successfully complete the program by becoming RNs, passing the licensing exam and working full time for the Northeast Georgia Health System can repay all or part of their funds provided under this program through service.

The loan may be cancelled on the basis of one calendar year (12) month's full-time employment of at least 36 hours a week for each academic year of assistance received.

The nurses receive their full salary in addition to canceling their loan debt. Graduates who do not fulfill the service obligation must repay their loans, in monthly installments plus interest, where applicable.

Application Procedure

The school and the Northeast Georgia Health System Service will determine eligibility.

Loan Disbursements


Upon approval, you will receive a Loan Guarantee and Disclosure Statement outlining the anticipated disbursement schedule, as determined by your school, for each loan guaranteed.

You will also receive a Service Loan Contract, which details the service loan information and repayment information. Loans are disbursed directly to your school usually in at least two disbursements.

Origination and federal default fees are set by federal statute and are deducted from loan proceeds. The origination fee is currently 0.5% for Stafford loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2009 and the federal default fee is currently 1.0% for Stafford loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2009.

Eligible Colleges and Universities

This program is available at North Georgia College and State University, Brenau University, Piedmont College, and the Augusta Campus of the Medical College of Georgia.
