Federal Pell Grant Program

Need-Based Grant

Purpose

To provide undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need with federal grant assistance toward the cost of attendance at eligible public and private colleges/universities and technical colleges.

Eligibility

  1. Demonstrate financial need, as determined by federal need-analysis methodology;
  2. Enrolled in an eligible public college, university, or technical college as an undergraduate student seeking a college degree or technical certificate/diploma;
  3. Must not have earned bachelor's or graduate level college degree;
  4. Be a U.S. citizen or national of the U.S. or have evidence from INS of eligible permanent resident alien status;
  5. Be in compliance with Selective Service registration requirements;
  6. Not be in default or owe a refund on a federal financial aid program;
  7. Maintain satisfactory academic progress, as defined by the college.

Value

The maximum Pell Grant award is $4,050 for the 2005-2006 award year. Each recipient's award amount varies, depending upon the expected family contribution compared to the cost of attendance, and the number of hours the student is enrolled.

Application Procedure

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Some colleges may also require applicants to complete the college's financial aid application. Each participating college sets their application deadline date.

Pell Grants are the foundation of federal student aid, to which aid from other federal and nonfederal sources may be added.
