Farewell for the Summer
May 26, 2006
I'm already starting to get tired of summer holidays. That's one of the drawbacks of coming home to a small town: there is so little to do when you aren't working or going to school.
I officially got laid off from my job at the nursery last week, but luckily I was able to find a job right away working in the gift shop at the waterslides in a nearby town. I haven't started working there yet though, since they are not yet open for the season.
I have orientation next Monday. I think they open sometime in the beginning of June, so that's not too far away. I haven't had to work at the pizza place since last Friday.
This week has been incredibly boring, especially since the weather has been ugly since last weekend. I'm hoping that once the waterslides open, working at both jobs will keep me fairly busy, and stave off this boredom I am experiencing. And if it doesn't, my mom is trying to convince me to go out and find a job waitressing somewhere.
I turn 19 next week. I'm pretty excited for my birthday, but really I think all of my friends are more excited. Unfortunately, it is on a Monday night, so basically everyone I know will have to work the next day, so we'll have to wait and see how it goes. I haven't made any definite plans yet, and everyone keeps bugging me about it. We'll just wait and see how I feel when we get closer to the actual day.
Working Hard for the Money
May 18, 2006
Working at the plant nursery has not
improved very much at all. It is much harder work than I thought it
would be, and because of a recent extreme heat wave, the last couple of
days have been extremely difficult.
Quite a few people have had to go home
with sunstroke, and today I went home early because I was sick. I've
been keeping my eyes open for any other jobs to replace this one, since
I am not enjoying myself and because I may be laid off soon.
Apparently my crew is only part time,
and since we finished what we had to do on Monday, it is very possible
that sometime this week I will be let go.
Luckily, even though I haven't found a
job to replace this one, I got my pizza delivery job back from last
summer and have been working at both jobs for the last week or so.
This week has been crazy. It's been
difficult getting into the swing of getting up super early to go to
work every morning, and then having to make it through a 13-hour day if
I work both jobs.
Adding to that difficulty is the fact
that everyone I know is starting to come home for the summer. This
means a lot more staying out late visiting and talking. All of my
friends from Australia managed to make it home within almost five days
of each other, and the one person I was most excited to see surprised
me by coming home a week early. It was great.
Working News
May 7, 2006
I have officially moved out of my aunt
and uncle's house and am back at home for the summer. Last weekend, I
packed up all of the stuff that I would need for the next four months.
I was amazed to find how much stuff I had. It was definitely way more
than I moved with originally.
I finally managed to get myself
somewhat motivated, so I dressed up to hand out some resumes downtown.
Apparently I picked a bad day, because of the six places I was planning
on going, I was only able to give out three of my resumes.
I got really lucky though, and a
nursery that I had gone to called me that evening and offered me a job.
I was really surprised, because I wasn't expecting anything. I have a
friend who applied there almost three weeks ago and they never called
her. Apparently I had a little better luck because of the volleyball
I've been playing all year and the fact that I am in pretty good shape.
It's actually pretty hard work, too.
When I woke up Thursday morning for my second day I was very sore,
especially my legs.
It's basically full-time work, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
with weekends off.
The only downside is that I am not
enjoying myself at all so far. I'm going to give it another couple of
weeks, but at the same time I think I'm going to keep applying
elsewhere to try for something I might enjoy more.
