Governor's Cup Challenge
In 2003, Governor Sonny Perdue created the Governor's Cup Challenge, a friendly competition to encourage Georgia high schools to increase their SAT scores. The competition awards those schools whose students achieve the greatest improvement in average SAT scores over their three previous years. "My philosophy is that the keys to educational success are found on the 'front lines' of our educational system," said Governor Perdue. "I believe that our students, parents, and educators will respond to positive reinforcements with a renewed passion to better our education system."
The Governor has identified three primary objectives of the Governor's Cup Challenge:
- To boost SAT scores in Georgia;
- To identify effective SAT preparation strategies of the Governor's Cup recipients and to share those strategies with other Georgia schools; and
- To celebrate success.
Schools participating in the Governor's Cup challenge compete against other schools of similar size in their area of the state, using parameters established by the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). High schools are categorized by GHSA into five classes, based on size of the student body, and further organized by eight geographic regions of the state.
Currently, each of the five statewide class winners receives the Governor's Cup, a $2,000 grant, a personal visit from the Governor, and other recognitions. The 35 regional winners receive a regional Championship Trophy and a $1,000 grant. The money must be spent on SAT preparation materials.
